History

Wisma Yeap Chor Ee (previously known as Yeap Chor Ee building) is one of the iconic landmarks facing Weld Quay. It used to be a mercantile office and godown dealing with goods from the harbour in the 20th century. It was occupied by Rainbow Art Gallery for a period of time, the date however is unknown. There were plans orignally to transform the building to a boutique hotel in 2008, but the plan fell out due to unknown reasons.oday, it is not in usage. Its monumental thick walls were meant to serve as fire-proofing and to ensure the goods were kept at a constant temperature in Malaya’s tropical climate. Its large windows and heavy loading doors provide ample ventilation and light into the space. We would assumed that the building has been through renovations as the roof truss brackets and tiles look particularly new.

Moment of Fame

The building also had its stardom to fame in Ang Lee’s movie, ‘Lust Caution’ in 2008. Ang Lee had mentioned that he particularly liked the white facade of the building. Adorned with a new fresh coat of white paint, the building also had a revolving door, display windows with manequins, a wooden flower stall and a roofed traffic post.
